2022 Special Giving Project: Goal $8,500
Each year HMS faculty and board present one special project that will benefit the students and offer a giving opportunity for those who don’t want to take anything home. Our Special Giving Project this year is to purchase a greenhouse from Lapp Structures in New Holland. This greenhouse will provide an opportunity for students at many grade levels to learn in a very hands-on way. For the past several years, middle school students have been planting, harvesting & preserving foods from our garden to sell at the auction and use in Family & Consumer Science (FCS) class. This greenhouse will allow students to see the process of growing plants from seed to harvest. In addition to gardening, there are so many possibilities for this greenhouse: science lessons, growing flowers for Servathon projects to local retirement communities, landscaping, developing native and rain gardens on our campus, fundraising, and much more!
The greenhouse that we are looking to purchase would be large enough for a class to work in together and provide space for multiple projects at the same time. It will also have a solar heating system to allow use of the greenhouse year round.
We are excited about all the ways that this greenhouse will be used to enhance our curriculum and complement our vision and mission at HMS. This special giving project will be a great opportunity for our students to engage in practical, hands-on learning that will not only teach the process of growing plants, but also teach higher values of service, community, and creation care.
