HMS Middle School Performing Arts

The spring drama production is a special part of our middle school program, bringing together extracurricular opportunities and core curriculum. Every middle school student at HMS learns what it takes to put together various aspects of a drama production and each student is required to participate in some way.

Students audition for acting parts, a drama club gathers publicity information, and students prepare props and work with the costume director. Volunteer adults work with student groups to assist students in running the lighting and sound, working with hairstyles and stage make-up, and learning basic set construction. Finally all students learn how to host guests in a semi-formal setting by serving at both a Friday luncheon for senior citizens groups and an evening dinner show open to the public.

2019 HMS Middle School presented: Twain’s Tales

adapted by David Taylor London

Twain’s Tales includes several short stories by the master American storyteller as well as a classic story from The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. The stories unfold as we join five local women in Hannibal, Missouri in the late 1800’s, who spend the morning entertaining each other on the general store porch by telling some of Mark Twain’s stories. Through the telling of these tall tales, we are not only entertained but also experience the razor-sharp wit and the exposing of human foibles that characterize so much of Mark Twain’s writing.

While this production has passed, you can check out images from the performance, the cast and crew at the HMS Facebook page.
